Projects
Here's just a small sampling of some of the projects I have been apart of over the years.
Sechelt BC
This is a shot from 2022, pruning deadwood from multiple Arbutus (Arbutus menziesii) on a beautiful property off the coast of Sechelt. It was an incredibly rewarding day spurless climbing my favourite tree species.
Campbell River BC
This is a shot from 2021, a removal of a Grand fir (Abies grandis). It was topped in the past, resulting in the tree regrowing over 14 different tops to replace it. Trees respond like the mythical Hydra… when you cut off one head, two more take its place, or in this instance 14.
MacMillan Park (Cathedral Grove) BC
In December 2022 I was fortunate enough to be apart of the yearly hazard tree mitigation done in Cathedral Grove, near Port Alberni. In this picture, I climbed into a 73m/239.5ft tall, 190cm/74” diameter, dead-standing, Douglas fir tree (Psuedotsuga menziesii) that was assessed as dangerous for the park and the highway. Instead of fully removing the tree, it was decided to blast the tree using explosives. Tree blasting is a fast, safe, and effective way to deal with hazardous trees, and when done right it creates highly valuable habitat for years to come. These explosives were set at a height of 21m/70'ft, the stem diameter at this height was still nearly 1.5m/5'ft. I was guided through the entire process by Dave “Dazy” Weymer, he played a central role in the development of the Danger Tree Blasting course for Fallers.
BC Coast
This is a shot from September 2020 during a Single Stem / Snap-and-Fly logging operation. This high value cedar was climbed, limbed, measured to a maximum weight for a helicopter to “lay over” to the ground. The saw used was a Stihl MS201TC, a 35.2cc climbing saw with a 16'“ bar.
